The Little Black Jacket

New York set the scene last week for the launch of Karl Lagerfeld and long-time French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld’s latest collaborative project, “The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited”. The project, a photography exhibition and much awaited coffee table book showcases black-and-white photographs, shot by Karl Lagerfeld himself that pay homage to the iconic clothing piece.
More than a hundred celebrities, actors, artists, singers, and rock stars, each with their own individual flair, are shot wearing a black, tweed Chanel Jacket, to a surprisingly varied effect. “It’s play time with an item that is timeless” according to Lagerfeld. “The Chanel jacket has become the symbol of certain elegance, feminine, with an air of nonchalance, classic and timeless, that is of all times”. The proof is in the photographs; Chanel’s Little Black Jacket remains to be a dynamic staple that can be worn by anyone, anyway.

The book is scheduled for release this spring.

Thomas Demand

Internationally renowned German artist Thomas Demand is set to transform an entire floor of the iconic Harry Seidler-designed MLC building in Sydney’s Martin Place for a new project entitled The Dailies, opening 23 March 2012.

Demand is installing his new series of photographic works inside 15 identical hotel rooms of the historic Commercial Travellers’ Association, that revolve around a long circular corridor.

The photographic works recreate small fragments from the architecture and interiors of daily life – poetic details Demand describes as ‘The Dailies’ like rushes from films or daily newspapers.

Presented by Kaldor Public Art Projects, Demand is the 25th artist project presented by the organisation and represents a world first for Australia. Running from 23 March until 22 April 2012, The Daillies allows rare public access to the unusual mushroom-shaped building.
